markham-civic-center: Markham Civic Center, Markham, Ontario, Canada Designed 1986 Architect of Record- Richard Stevens Architect Ltd. The winning entry in a design competition for a new civic center in Markham, Ontario. The design features a low-rise building in a carefully landscaped setting. The 130,000 square foot building provides flexible accommodation for all the town's municipal departments. Public facilities include a 220-seat council chamber, committee rooms, chapel, winter garden cafeteria, reference library and a daycare center. The building is a reinforced concrete structure clad in re-constituted stone. The design provides for views out toward a large man-made lake. The lake acts as a reflecting pool and provides a large skating surface in a natural setting during the winter. Other landscaping elements include a Civic Plaza and an amphitheater.
