hugo-eppich-house: Hugo and Brigitte Eppich House, West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Designed 1979
Located on a south-facing slope of West Vancouver, the residence was designed for the owner of a diversified manufacturing firm specializing in metal fabrication. The intent was to construct the primarily steel and glass building using the materials, expertise, and labour available in the plant. The 7,000 square foot structure comprises of three levels set at right angles to the slope of the site.
The main living level, including the pool and recreation facilities, separates the children's level from the parent's level above. The parent's level overlooks the enclosed swimming pool structure, which is oriented perpendicular to the main building mass.
The other two levels are perched in terraces cut parallel into the site and retained by stone planter walls. Each level terminates in a half vault greenhouse space of glass block for privacy from neighboring residences. Glass and aluminum wall panels are broken by stainless steel columns, which support the painted white steel structural beams.
A creek bordering the south end of the site was diverted to create a reflecting pool completing the series of pools on each terrace above. The hard materials of the building itself is contrasted by the softer interior finishes.
