In the New York Apartment the windowsills were already low, but not low enough to enjoy the street below. We decided to raise the living room floor seven inches, covering the platform with grey glass without carpet. Grey slate in the entranceway, covered with a beautiful red kilim from Uzbekistan which we had picked up in London, contrasted with the glass. Mirrors on the further wall and inside the deep casements of the windows would pick up the movement pattern of the traffic passing on the streets below and bring that New York rhythm right into our living room. Between the windows and the glass floor was a long low planter of “baby’s tears”- a strip of green overlooking Central Park. The cabinet for the stereo and television was of sand blasted aluminum with a black recessed strip for the controls. The same material would be used for the dining room table, edged in a polished stainless steel round pipe frame. The Kripacz touch with the dining room table was to crank down the end to a side-table height next to the L-shaped grey velvet Italian sofa in the living room. He also designed a triangular coffee table out of sheets of polished stainless steel. This picked up the form of the very beautiful mauve Ellsworth Kelly featured on the end wall opposite the mirrored wall.
